A Garden Remembered — Original Mixed-Media Artwork on Linen

An expressive, one-of-a-kind wall hanging created on pure natural linen, exploring flowers through colour, texture and spontaneous mark-making.

Loose, abstracted blooms emerge across the linen in layers of soft pink, rich blue, deep rose, ochre and green. Some forms are defined while others dissolve into washes, lines and gestural marks, allowing the natural weave and warm neutral tone of the linen to remain an integral part of the composition.

I created the piece using a combination of acrylic paint mixed with textile medium and oil paint, building areas of both transparency and heavier texture. I then stitched back into the painted linen, following and extending some of the marks and floral forms. The stitching introduces another layer of drawing, giving the surface greater depth, movement and tactile interest.

I love the contrast between the raw, understated quality of the linen and the expressive colour and texture of the flowers. The unfinished, organic quality of the edges adds to its character as a textile artwork rather than a conventional painting.

Each mark and stitch is made by hand, making this an entirely unique piece.

Materials: 100% linen, acrylic paint, textile medium, oil paint and thread
Technique: Painting, mark-making and hand stitching
Artwork: Original, one of a kind

Size: Approx 146cm x 140cm
